To provide the best flexibility for layout, we created a homepage composed of Wordpress widgets using custom sidebars. A total of 6 sidebars were added for each row on the homepage and each content box can hold standard and custom widgets.

We created 4 widgets in total, two were to provide new functionality, and two were to make areas of the provided theme available in widget form. The two new widgets were a Youtube video widget and a Page Excerpt Widget.

The Youtube widget accepted a Youtube URL and automatically extracts the video ID which is used to display the player. This widget also allowed having a title present or to forgo a title to save space.

The Page Excerpt Widget provided many options such as whether to include a link to the page from the title, whether to display a ‘read more’ link below the content, three sizes of content boxes from 33%, 50%, and 66%, whether to allow HTML to be displayed, and finally whether to force the use of the page content rather than the excerpt.

The two other widgets provided a contact form and recent posts functionality.
